Work

James graduated from Cambridge University with a degree in Economics. He began his career in the City in the mid-1990s and became an equity derivatives trader.

The role took James to Hong Kong, where he settled for almost 15 years. James transitioned to private banking with HSBC and then Pictet, building a strong reputation and contacts within Wealth Management in Asia.

An enthusiastic entrepreneur, he co-founded UK-based wealth manager Black Swan Capital in 2000 and established Buchanan Capital in Hong Kong in 2016 as an independent adviser and strategic growth partner to the financial services industry. In this capacity, James co-founded Altura in 2018.

James’ role as Director at Altura is to keep an eye on governance and assist Rob with business, strategic and corporate financial planning.

Home

James has five children – four sons and a daughter – who take up most of his spare time!

When he does have ‘me time’, James loves equestrian sports and is studying for his BHS level 2 exams. He is also a novice polo player. One of his ambitions is to play with (or against!) Prince William.

James also does a lot of trail running and adventure races; anything to get the heart racing and the adrenaline flowing.

What’s your favourite holiday destination?

West coast of Scotland.

What’s your favourite song to play in the car?

Feel It Still, by Portugal, The Man.

What was the first album you bought?

I think it was something by Abba…

Cleaning the kitchen. I am the master. It’s a fact.

When the dessert menu arrives, what are you looking for?

Rhubarb crumble and custard.

What three qualities draw you to new people?

Friendly and interesting to talk to, with an optimistic attitude.

What’s your pet peeve?

The strange ‘fashion’ where people wear their trousers halfway down.

What’s the best gift you’ve ever received?

A half-eaten sweet from my baby daughter, because I know how much she wanted it for herself.

Who would be at your dream dinner party?

Sir Winston Churchill, General Gordon of Khartoum, and Field Marshall Jan Smuts.
